Jodie’s Photography learning journey ..
“I love how photography has made me see the whole world as art, It’s made me take notice and appreciate all the small details and simple beauties that I used to completely miss or just take for granted. All The beautiful sunsets, simple shadows, a small insect on a leaf, the details in a flower, a moment of emotion on someones face..now everything looks like a work of art to me waiting to be captured, this has been my favourite thing about my love affair with photography”
I so desperately wanted to get into photography, I knew it was a passion and that I had a flare for it. Ever since a little girl I used to save up my pocket money to buy disposible cameras to take pictures of my friends dressed up/posing and I would be so so excited waiting at my local camera shop to get the developed prints back. I always loved art & painting and I saw photography as painting with light. After purchasing my first camera and falling in love with it I decided to try a college Diploma, However, being back in a classroom so soon wasn’t for me, learning at such a slow pace in a confined space, I found it boring and i ended up quitting. I tried out a few short courses and workshops, I think I went to three in total some of them costing thousands and I came away feeling ripped off, uninpisred and had felt I had learnt nothing but a bunch of technical jargon. The courses were non personal, with no one-on-one time, in a boring dull class room, they were all written work with no hands on learning and had nowhere near enough time to ask all the tonnes of questions I was dying to ask.
I remember thinking “aperture shutter speed f stops focus composition what??” I just want to take beautiful pictures! It was like learning a a whole new language, there were all these numbers and calculations, it actually put me off! I aksed myself “Who am I kidding thinking i could be a photographer?” i felt this was all way over my head and my dream took a back seat.
A short while after, I went travelling with my camera and some books in tow and I started taking pictures just for fun and as a hobby, on the beach, of scenery and people and under no pressure at all, and I re-ignited my passion. I gradually found my way around the camera, read all the books i could get my hands on and found and a way of learning from scratch that worked. So when I got back to the UK I started reading into it all again,I read more watched online tutorials and sat in Jessops all day drilling the poor staff until eventually it all started to click into place then i was able to start putting my own portfolio together and the rest is history
Photography has been amazing for me, It has given me a wonderful hobby, so many great opportunties, Ive made some life long friends and its opened up so many doors for me. I now have a career that I enjoy so much.
